21 July 2022 – 4:53 pm
A person riding a scooter was taken to hospital with serious injuries after an accident partially closed Highway 97 in Summerland.
The crash happened on Highway 97 between Solly Road and Rosedale Avenue this afternoon, July 21, and caused the highway to be partially closed.
At approximately 3:15 p.m., a member of the Summerland RCMP Detachment, BC Highway Patrol and Emergency Services responded to the crash.
Police determined that a southbound SUV struck a northbound moped/scooter type motorcycle that turned left in front of the SUV. The SUV, in an attempt to avoid the collision, collided with another northbound vehicle, RCMP said in a statement.
Two occupants of the SUV were taken to hospital with minor injuries, while the driver of the scooter was taken to hospital in critical condition, according to the RCMP.
A BC Highway Patrol officer based in Keremeos is monitoring the investigation with the assistance of Summerland RCMP and Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Services.
At this time, no criminal act would have contributed to the cause of the collision.
Police are asking anyone with information about the crash, including dash cam footage, to contact BC Highway Patrol at Keremeos at 250-499-2250.
The left northbound lane is closed while the two southbound lanes are closed.
There is no estimated time the road will reopen and no detours are available, according to Drive BC
