Greensky Bluegrass and The Wood Brothers held their joint Jersey Shore tour on Saturday. The gig at the Seaside Heights Beach Stage in Seaside Heights, New Jersey saw Oliver Wood once again join GSBG for The Allman Brothers Band’s classic ‘Midnight Rider’.
After an opening set by The Wood Brothers featuring favorites like “Luckiest Man” and “The Muse”, Greensky began his set with “New & Improved” from their 2022 album. Stress dreams. The band would also feature “Reasons To Stay” from the LP and the title track elsewhere in the set. After “New & Improved”, the quintet launched into a seamless three-song sequence ending with the must-have “Just to Lie” and “Burn Them”, which included “Hold On”. GSBG then paired “While Waiting” and “Kerosene”.
Then Oliver Wood emerged to help Greensky in “Midnight Rider”. The collaborators gave a glimpse of what their touring crews could look like when they performed the song together at West Virginia’s 4848 Festival in July. While Jano Rix of the Wood Bros did not join Jersey, Oliver Wood and GSBG mandolinist Paul Hoffman provided powerful harmonies on the South Idlewild coupe Gregg Allman co-wrote with ABB roadie Robert Kim Payne.
The rest of the Greensky Bluegrass set also included notables like their first cover of John Hartford’s “Steam Powered Airplane” in over 50 gigs, according to Phantasy Tour, plus original favorites like “Fixin To Ruin”, “I’d Probably Kill You” and a closing “Leap Year” set. The quintet would also dedicate its encore to the songs of one of New Jersey’s most famous sons, Bruce Springsteen, performing “Dancing In The Dark” for the first time in nearly 80 shows, according to PTas well as “Atlantic City” to end the evening on the Jersey Shore.
